Blogging Frustration
Unit Themes January 30th, 2009This is just a comment from Lory, the teacher. If you are feeling overwhelmed, that is to be expected. You were given a lot to absorb in one session. This process will be a lot easier as you become more familiar with the tools. Not all positions based on what you do and grade level in education are even appropriate to have a blog.

I feel like my brain will explode!

Yes, so much to do, so little time!

Well…I have spent quite a bit of time playing around on my blog and I am still far from satisfied…but if you feel like laughing check it out…My husband had a few hours and made an avatar…not sure it was the best idea but it is very funny…I have switched the theme probably 25 times already. I have also fiddled with calendars and maps without much success…I am trying very hard to see an application in Biology for all this…my fear is that the technology will be the focus not the content: there is already much stress involved in covering the subject for, you guessed it, the MCAS…

Lory, I certainly appreciate your understanding and compassion relative to the ‘overwhelmingness’ factor. I have decided to approach this whole new ‘genre’ in slow motion (not my usual style)- to really take my time and process each new bit of information / knowledge. In my heart I want to know and be able to do everything related to blogging instantly but I realize this is an unrealistic expectation and I need to let it go.Every now and then I visit my newly created blog just to check it out – it’s still there looking exactly as I left it. I will, hopefully, have some time to work on it during class on Thursday – I would like to become more skilled at working with photos and music and creating links. I am also curious how a blog works as a back and forth / give and take conversation because it seems to me as if the blog ‘owner’ puts stuff out there – people respond and then what? I will try to clarify my question and ask it during class. See you Thursday.

Lory,
I am feeling a bit overwhelmed, but that is why I signed on-to get the tools. I appreciate your assistance and have more questions than answeres right now, but hope to make my blog a worthwhile tool for students and me.

having a great time playing…

Hi Lori,
Thanks for sharing your comment about the course. I do feel overwhelmed but I am looking at the course as one in which I can grow in knowledge in a subject that is not in my comfort zone. I feel that if I can set up a blog with a few interesting activities for one of my students to use who has autism I will feel that I have made progress.

I am frustrated because I need to start over! I do not have all the time in the world to work on it this week with grades due. I did sign up for another blog, however they made me use another name and a different e-mail address! That was frustrating too! Oh well, I will get it done soon.
thank you

Just figuring out what I do to post is difficult. Thankfully, Adele is helping me.

I just wish I had more time to play and explore with it, but it’s been tough with finishing up report cards this week. I’m still a little unclear about how to organize pages and posts in a logical way for families and students.

I am a little frustrated that my first post has disappeared. Adele tried helping me, but neither of us could figure out what happened to it.
I did, however, figure out how to add to “about” and put in some text about myself. I’m sure I will want to edit what I’ve put in, I just wanted to work on part of my blog. I still need to figure out how to put in the calendar, as that will be an important part of my blog for my department.

After the intensity of last week’s class, I was certain that my weblog (Is that the right name for it?)would be finished by this week’s class. But, alas, the “tyranny of the urgent”(ie. report cards and 100 essays) overruled and here I am, the night before, scrambling to complete this assignment. Comments on the chapters: I can see why it is important for us, as teachers,to become bloggers before we invite our students to do so. I also liked the idea of the teacher’s role “becoming one of connector, not just evaluator.”
Looking forward to another Web 2.0 class with my face glued to the computer screen!

I left class last week feeling very overwhelmed. Simple things seemed not to work. I did not feel so frustrated using blogger. If I was this frustrated, I can’t imagine my 10 and 11 year old students creating their own blogs in edublogs, even if they are more tech savvy than I am.

My blog is at http://howellatdy.edublogs.org/
So far setting up a blogroll for my students, explaining and reexplaining, showing and reshowing it, etc, has been a giant time vacuum. The students and I are all experiencing the launch effect in which an inordinate amount of energy is exerted to get the rocket off the ground.
A few bright spots have occured:
1) some of the students have started to run w/the independent reading and learning aspect of the “reader” and have been excitedly sharing stuff, info. articles w/me (I hope with their fellow students soon).
2) one student in one class figured out how to import music, then kids in other kids wanted to do that too, then one kid posted a link to show ppl how to add music to their edublogs—that’s ownership and collaborative learning, one of the overarching goals of this endeavor.

I’ve been having fun gathering resources to add to my blog. I guess it will be more of a traditional website for my class. I think they’ll love it.

I keep changing my mind, I am still having problems arranging the page- or pages. I am now trying to settle and complete resources. I like technology all set with directions- I am used to the technology- building a tech site is another whole ballgame!

A 1st grade teacher in Montreal is looking for other 1st grade teachers to blog with and eventually SKYPE(when we get THAT good). Her name is Mary Ellen Lynch http://teacher102.edublogs.org/ and she contacted me through the blogging challenge. Her students speak English.

Rock-Paper-Scissors
Late-breaking blogging frustration: a class committed to submitting readling logs on their blog gets stiffed whenever edublogs decides to “upgrade” their site in the middle of homework time.
Paper wins again.
